THE WRAP

Roosters run riot against Eels … Carney injury adds insult to loss to rivals … Tahs edge the Blues… Tinkler abandons dream stable … Rusty Swans avoid round-one slip-up … Wanderers clinch fairytale finish in debut season.

PLAY FOR BRITTNEY

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is considering drafting in one of the nation's best female college basketball players. Brittney Griner from Baylor University is the first NCAA player to score more than 2000 points and appeared set to sign for WNBA franchise Phoenix Mercury, who has the first draft pick. However the Mavericks may intervene by making a surprise move to offer her a trial with a view to sign her permanently.

''If she is the best on the board, I will take her,'' Cuban told ESPN. ''I've thought about it. I've thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I'd lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it's not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it.''

Griner welcomed Cuban's comments on Twitter by urging him to offer her a deal.

FEELING THE PINCH

Slovak cyclist Peter Sagan has been forced to make a public apology for his cheeky podium antics when he pinched the bottom of a model following his second-place finish of the Tour de Flanders. The 23-year-old released a video apologising for his stunt after receiving a barrage of complaints from the public and rival competitors after his cheeky pinch. The model, Maya, was bending over to place a peck on the cheek of winner Fabian Cancellara when Sagan leant over to his left to pinch her bottom in front of the cameras.

''Was not my intention to disrespect women today on the podium. Just a joke, sorry if someone was disturbed about it,'' Sagan said. ''I never should have done it. I am so sorry and I hope Maya and anyone else I have offended knows how sorry I am and accepts my apology. I promise to act more respectfully in the future.''

DI CANIO DUX FOR COVER

Newly appointed Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio hit back at suggestions he's a fascist, despite boasting to Italian media he was during his playing days. Amid pressure from some of the most senior religious figures in Britain, Di Canio broke a three-day silence surrounding speculation of his extreme political stance but his denial of being a fascist has failed to convince many. Following his denial, British media brought up the many right-arm fascist salutes Di Canio made towards Lazio supporters and when he wore a T-shirt of the club's right-wing and racist supporter group, Irriducibili on national television. A ''DUX'' tattoo on his right bicep pronounces an admiration of Benito Mussolini and his attendance at the funeral of convicted Italian fascist bomber Paolo Signorelli has cast further scepticism on his alleged political neutrality. Though Sunderland fans may forgive him if he steers the struggling Black Cats to safety in the Premier League.

IN GOOD KOMPANY

Manchester City midfielder Vincent Kompany came to the rescue to buy-out cash-strapped Belgian club FC Bleid and has now asked for fans to rename it. Kompany has allowed anyone to submit their opinions on the rebranding of Bleid on a website listed as WeStartFromScratch.com where he reveals his plans to transform the third-tier club.

IT'S NOT A MONKEY RIDING A GREYHOUND, BUT YOU'LL LIKE IT

Sitting behind home plate at a baseball game is usually regarded as having one of the best seats in the ballpark. However a young fan got more than he expected when a foul ball during the Cincinnati Reds-Los Angeles Angels game went flying his way this week. Let's just say he looked more scared than Homer Simpson being told doughnuts had been banned from Springfield. Search: Terrified kid is your MLB GIF of the year.

IF YOU'RE NOT WATCHING SPORT YOU SHOULD BE LISTENING TO

Fun House, The Stooges. As Iggy Pop was spitting on himself, prancing around the stage at the Hordern Pavilion and talking about ''f---ing kangaroos'' on Tuesday night, Ears thought: ''Yep - that's what I want to be doing when I'm 66 years old.''
