A LATE goal from Dom McFarlane handed defending champions Central its first loss of the season, as St Patrick's secured a 4-3 win at Lyneham on Saturday.

St Patrick's was missing five regular players due to commitments with the ACT team at the under-21 national championships. But McFarlane stepped up to slot the match-winning goal with seven minutes remaining.

''It was a hard-fought victory, the guys showed great determination to come back from behind twice,'' St Patrick's coach Andrew Fitzpatrick said.

In what was a seesawing fixture, Central took an early lead before St Patrick's levelled the score at half-time.

Central got off to the perfect start after the break and scored an early goal, before Josh Thomas struck back for St Patrick's.

The teams again traded goals before McFarlane finished off a cross-field pass with a superb shot on goal.

Meanwhile, ANU and Old Canberrans had a 3-3 draw, while Wests extracted some revenge for their minor semi-final loss to United last year with a 5-3 victory.

Garry Backhus and Adam Baxter both scored braces for Wests, with Steve Carter their other scorer.
