Rogers in top order to get the job done

Australian selectors have been hailed for their decisiveness in revealing Chris Rogers has been elevated to partner Shane Watson at the top of its Ashes batting order.

The 35-year-old Victorian's selection for Australia's final pre-Test match, a three-dayer against Worcestershire that started on Tuesday night, was complemented by coach Darren Lehmann's confirmation of the redoubtable Rogers' recall, 5½ years after his first and only Test (when he replaced an injured Matthew Hayden).

The left-hander boasts a first-class batting average of 50.38 across 239 matches, and has scored 790 runs at an average of 65.83 in the eight matches he played for Middlesex in England since the end of the last Australian season.

Rogers' lack of international exposure is countered by his wealth of experience in England, against English bowlers, facing an English ball, which is set to thrust him into an unofficial leadership role among the batsmen when the series starts next Wednesday at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

''The Dukes ball is different,'' Rogers said. ''I think you need to get a real feel for it, particularly as an opening batsman. The ball is going to do some crazy things at times. With my experience, I can be fairly comfortable with my knowledge of that. It's still going to be a huge challenge because I think the English bowlers are exceptional. If I do well, then I can be very satisfied.

''I think the character I am, too, I can pass on these kinds of things. This first Test is still going to be a bit of an unknown for me and I have to deal with those things. But I do see my role as passing on some information to the young guys. I enjoy that.''

The selection of Rogers, and the early disclosure of it, was strongly endorsed by his state coach Greg Shipperd.

''I think the past few decisions, in terms of setting Watson up and Rogers up, is really clever planning, and an excellent move, too,'' Shipperd said.

''It clears the doubt and allows the players to focus all their time and effort … knowing ball one they'll be backed to get the job done, and they can start from this game [against Worcestershire] to form that critical partnership.''

The decision ensures Australia will field a different opening combination to its previous Test, in India in March. Nevertheless, both openers used in that match - Ed Cowan and David Warner - are in contention for selection elsewhere in the batting order.

Shipperd, the veteran Bushrangers coach, said he rated Rogers alongside the likes of Mike Hussey, Jamie Siddons and Jamie Cox, who consistently scored heavily at domestic level without reward (although Hussey belatedly was selected for Australia). He said one of Rogers' great strengths was that, like England top-order batsmen Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott, he had trained himself to play within his limitations.

''That's usually a strength of all top-quality players, and probably the recipe for a lot of our young batters to find … the balance between 'back yourself' but understanding what that actually means. There's gears and tempos … and shifts that need to be applied at different stages of the game. He understands that.''

David Hussey, a teammate of Rogers both at Victoria and Melbourne club Prahran, insisted Rogers was exerting a Cook-like influence - in the last Ashes series the England captain amassed 766 runs at an average of 127.67 - on the looming series.

''He'll be extremely important. He bats for a long time and once he gets in he is similar to Alastair Cook in that he's very difficult to get out,'' said Hussey, who is in England playing for Nottinghamshire. ''He might not be the prettiest batsman going around, but he gets the job done.''
