Lleyton Hewitt's immediate future will be determined by scans on a wrist injury that has bothered him in recent weeks.

The Australian's plans for a match reunion with his now-regular practice partner Roger Federer in Shanghai were thwarted by a first-round loss to Italian Andreas Seppi.

Hewitt could not convert a promising start against the world No. 22, losing 6-4, 6-1 under the closed Qi Zhong stadium roof on another rain-soaked day. From 3-0, Hewitt lost five consecutive games, and nine of the last 12, as Seppi settled into his serve to beat the former world No. 1 for the third time in six attempts.

It buried the prospect of a 27th career meeting between Hewitt and Federer, but what would have been the pair's first in more than two years.

Hewitt will now seek a medical diagnosis for his wrist injury, which will determine whether he competes in Vienna next week.

"I've just had a bit of a niggle in my wrist the last two weeks," he said. "I'm going to get that assessed and make a decision from there. Obviously the next focus is the Australian Open and then the Davis Cup tie against France."
