Racing royalty: Gai eyes Ascot

Horseracing

Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente is set to venture to Royal Ascot next year.

Last night, Ascot officials were excited that Gai Waterhouse was prepared to target the 4000m Ascot Gold Cup - one of the two races for which the Queen presents the trophy - with the imported stayer.

''It is always something I've wanted to do - and if you have the right horse, why not,'' Waterhouse said. ''We've won the Melbourne Cup and it is very hard to win two of them, so we have to look for other challenges.''

Royal Ascot officials are confident Waterhouse will have a number of runners there next year but are waiting for the dust to settle on the Cup success before broaching the matter with her.

Waterhouse has travelled to England before with Bentley Biscuit, which was unplaced.
